Free Screening of "Matewan"

Join us at the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center on Friday, July 18th, at 5:00PM for a free screening of Matewan with a conversation and performance with folklorist and Matewan fiddler Gerald Milnes to follow. Popcorn will be available.

Matewan (1987) is a film by the acclaimed independent director John Sayles about the events of the 1920 coal mine strike in Mingo County and the Battle of Matewan that ensued.

Shot on location in West Virginia, this film highlights the shared culture of Appalachian resilience that developed in the mountains by immigrant, Appalachia-born White, and Black workers. The film stars Chris Cooper, James Earl Johns, David Sathairn, and Mary McDonnell. The soundtrack features Appalachian music with legendary bluegrass singer Hazel Dickens and Elkins local Gerald Milnes on fiddle.

Following the film Gerald Milnes will discuss his involvement with Matewan and the role of old time music in Appalachian heritage.

The Discovery Center offers wheelchair seating for events, and wheelchair access from the accessible parking to the exterior door of each level of the facility. We will attempt to arrange for accommodations services for any event with prior request.
